What is Public Liability Insurance?

If you have an office, building or studio that is visited by clients or the public, or you work in a public area or organise events, public liability insurance is essential. Public liability insurance, also known as general liability, covers claims against you or your business from third parties for bodily injury and property damage as a result of your business activities. Public liability insurance protects your business against compensation claims and legal costs if it is alleged you or your business caused an injury or death to a third party or damage to their property, either on your premises or working off-site. It covers legal costs defending claims and pays compensation if you or your business is found to be at fault. In circumstances where you are liable for injury, death or damage to a third party, public indemnity insurance compensates the third party for your mistake. Public liability insurance also provides cover for defence costs in situations where the claim made by the third party is unjustified. Contractually you may also be required by your client to have insurance. Without public liability insurance, if you are found at fault, you could face significant legal and compensation costs which could result in the liquidation of your business.
