Insurance for Production Studios

Specialist cover for production studios, from unhappy clients to a cyber attack.

What you need to know about insurance for production studios

As a partner business of Williamson Carson, insurers to the creative industries, we know the film industry inside out and the associated risks. We have been insuring production studios since 1986 and we only work with specialist insurers.

We offer both discounted pre-made insurance packages for production companies and bespoke packages for those with more complicated needs.

We know what you need covered:

  • You’ll need broad and comprehensive cover for your editing equipment and other kit. We know it’s vital to your work, specialist and often bespoke and difficult to replace. We’ll make sure your equipment is replaced quickly and we can arrange cover that allows you to hire replacements while your equipment is replaced.
  • You’ll need public liability for inside and outside your studio and employers’ liability to ensure anyone on your premises, visitors and staff, are protected.
  • We understand that sometimes you’ll need to hire specialist euqipment which is why we offer a policy extension to cover hired kit.
  • We know that sometimes things go wrong, so we offer professional indemnity insurance in case film is corrupted or accidentally deleted.

production studios

We advise all production studios have:

  • Equipment and camera insurance.
  • Buildings insurance if you own your studio.
  • Tenants’ improvements if you lease the building, but have invested in improvements to the premises.
  • Liability (public and employers’ liability) is crucial if you rent or sublet your studio and if people visit your studio for shoots.
  • Professional indemnity.

Our policies also include a number of complementary covers exclusive to Williamson Carson, detailed on all quotes.

Yes, because sometimes things go wrong.

In most cases a comprehensive insurance policy is not going to break the bank and can save you a lot of time, stress and money in the long run.

Most clients will expect you to have insurance and some will ask to see your policy so it’s important to make sure you’re covered.

As the appointed broker to the Association of Photographers (AOP), we understand your industry needs and can ensure you have adequate cover.

Yes, if you have photographic insurance with us, we can cover, on an all-risks basis, your:

  • Photographic technical equipment.
  • Buildings.
  • Tenants’ improvements.
  • Props, set, wardrobe.
  • Office and studio contents.
  • Library stock.
  • Mobile communications property.

All-risks insurance is fully comprehensive cover which includes loss, accidental damage and theft.

Yes, our policies cover you worldwide, apart from areas of conflict and areas with UK and US trade sanctions.

If you are travelling to a high-risk location, speak to your insurer and always check the wording on your policy.

If you need it, in certain circumstances we can restrict a policy to ‘premises only’ cover for a reduced premium.

Yes, our policies cover you for worldwide travel apart from areas of conflict or areas with UK and US trade sanctions, whether that’s a work-related trip or a holiday.

Not necessarily.

Typically, when hiring equipment you will be responsible for insuring it and your insurance must include 13 weeks ‘loss of hire’ cover, which compensates the hire company for lost income should their equipment be lost or damaged whilst in your possession.

Some hire companies may offer their own insurance but this can be expensive and the majority don’t.

We advise you insure any borrowed equipment along with your own, particularly if borrowing it for an extended period.

It’s best practice to have an up-to-date list as it makes the claims process quicker and smoother, but it’s not mandatory.

‘New for old’ means that your broken, damaged or stolen equipment will be replaced with the latest, state-of-the-art model, even if your original was out-of-date or obsolete.

Our insurance provides ‘new for old’ cover as standard, providing the values you have submitted are the new replacement values. You should ensure the values insured are sufficient to cover replacement at today’s prices.

This relates to equipment you have hired.

In the event of a claim, a supplier would expect their loss of earnings to be reimbursed.

In addition, our policies will allow you to rent equipment whilst your own equipment is being repaired or replaced.

Public liability will protect you in cases of bodily injury or property damage associated with an incident involving your business.

Professional indemnity covers you for allegations of mistakes and negligence.

It provides compensation to your client (or a third-party) in circumstances where you are liable due to professional negligence, and usually covers associated defence or legal costs.

Your policy should include important extensions for studios such as copyright infringement, or any misappropriation of musical compositions, graphic material, or artwork.

Yes, we always recommend you get professional indemnity.

We are seeing an increase in claims relating to copyright and intellectual property. It’s very easy for a third party to bring an allegation of negligence or breach of intellectual property, even if the grounds for doing so are unfounded.

Employers’ liability will protect you from legal costs should an employee sustain a bodily injury in the course of their employment.

Yes, if you have any employees, it is compulsory in the UK to have employers’ liability.

We know the creative industries are unique because of the prevalence of freelancers. Even if you employ an extra pair of hands for a short period of time, such as assistants, you should always maintain employers’ liability.

All our quotes are personalised, and the premium is typically linked to the size of the business and your precise business activities. We find that in most cases, our policies are incredibly competitive.

Our packaged production policies which cover equipment, public liability and employers’ liability start at as little as £245, plus Insurance Premium Tax, annually. The policy also includes production insurance extensions unique to Whinney Insurance Brokers and not available elsewhere.

If you own the studio buildings this would be in addition.

No, we don’t charge administration fees.

However, an increase in cover may result in an additional premium due.

Theft from unattended vehicles is limited to £5,000 if there is no manufacturer’s approved alarm.

This increases to £15,000 if there is an approved alarm installed.

Contact us if you need to make a claim and you’ll be allocated a personal claims handler.

Our standard excess is £200, or £500 for theft from vehicles.

You can pay in full, by two instalments or by direct debit.

Some of our partner insurers offer monthly instalments at no extra cost.

Yes, typically the finance providers will charge for direct debit, which is why we encourage clients to pay in full or two instalments.

If you want to pay by direct debit we’ll explain the charges.

If you have been transparent with us and declared all previous claims it will not affect your policy with us.

In most cases we will need to declare the claim to the insurers.

We can cover drones for theft but your policy won’t cover your drones in flight or any aviation liability. We are working on a solution so watch this space.

We partner with a number of high-quality insurers. Their details will be shared on all quotes.

Unique Cover
Editing and Technical Media Insurance

Editing and technical media insurance for production studios

We cover for damage or theft of your editing and technical media equipment and computers offering worldwide all-risks coverage, including accidental damage and theft as standard on all policies.

Our cover is available on all types of photographic, film, media and computer equipment and unlike other providers, we will even cover equipment you hire. Our policies always cover the hire fees whilst your equipment is being repaired or replaced.

Public and employers' liability for production studios

Public liability covers bodily injury or property damage caused by your production studio. It is often purchased alongside employers’ liability which protects you from legal claims should an employee be injured in the course of their employment.

Employers’ liability is a legal requirement in the UK and you may be required to have it in place to cover those who work with you, even people on temporary contracts like assistants and models.

Public and Employers Liability
Professional Indemnity

Professional indemnity for production studios

Professional indemnity covers you for mistakes, or allegations that you’ve made a mistake. To be fully covered, you need the right policy.

Our policies are tailored to cover the unique risks faced by professionals in the filmmaking industry, including breach of intellectual property or copyright, breach of licences and unintentional breach of client contracts.

Many insurers will provide a miscellaneous professional indemnity policy excluding the key risks you face but with us, you can be confident you are fully covered. All our policies comply with the Advertising Producers Association (APA) contracts.

Studio and buildings insurance

As well as cover for the kit in your studio, we can insure the studio itself. It can also be extended to include business interruption which covers the loss of income and/or additional costs while your business is out of action.
