Client complaints about missed deadlines or a damaged laptop? We know your risks and have you covered.
What you need to know about insurance for design studios
We have been insuring design studios since 1986. We offer both discounted pre-made insurance packages for design studios and bespoke packages for studios with more complicated requirements.
Working with us, you can be confident you’re covered.
What insurance you need
As a partner business of Williamson Carson, insurers to the creative industries, we know the media inside out and the associated risks. We understand that you need cover for:
- Your kit – We offer broad and comprehensive cover for your design equipmen that is vital to your work and difficult to replace. You need insurance from a specialist insurer who will help you replace your equipment quickly and understands your equipment is specialist, often bespoke. If it takes three weeks to replace your equipment, we can arrange cover that allows you to hire equipment whilst you wait.
- Your studio and your liability – You may have people coming in and out of your design studio. Unfortunately slips and trips can be expensive but we can cover your public liability both inside and outside your studio. We can also provide cover for employers’ liability, for staff injuries and accidents in the workplace.
- Hired-in equipment. We understand there will be times you need to hire additional specialist equipment. If you do, we can provide a policy extension to cover hired-in equipment automatically.
- Professional indemnity insurance. If things go wrong during design, such as a file is corrupted or accidentally deleted, you could be at the sharp end of legal threats from your client but our professional indemnity will have your back.

Yes, our policies cover you for worldwide travel apart from areas of conflict or areas with UK and US trade sanctions, whether that’s a work-related trip or a holiday.
Not necessarily.
Typically, when hiring equipment you will be responsible for insuring it and your insurance must include 13 weeks ‘loss of hire’ cover, which compensates the hire company for lost income should their equipment be lost or damaged whilst in your possession.
Some hire companies may offer their own insurance but this can be expensive and the majority don’t.
We advise you insure any borrowed equipment along with your own, particularly if borrowing it for an extended period.
It’s best practice to have an up-to-date list as it makes the claims process quicker and smoother, but it’s not mandatory.
‘New for old’ means that your broken, damaged or stolen equipment will be replaced with the latest, state-of-the-art model, even if your original was out-of-date or obsolete.
Our insurance provides ‘new for old’ cover as standard, providing the values you have submitted are the new replacement values. You should ensure the values insured are sufficient to cover replacement at today’s prices.
This relates to equipment you have hired.
In the event of a claim, a supplier would expect their loss of earnings to be reimbursed.
In addition, our policies will allow you to rent equipment whilst your own equipment is being repaired or replaced.
Public liability will protect you in cases of bodily injury or property damage associated with an incident involving your business.
Professional indemnity covers you for allegations of mistakes and negligence.
It provides compensation to your client (or a third-party) in circumstances where you are liable due to professional negligence, and usually covers associated defence or legal costs.
Your policy should include important extensions for studios such as copyright infringement, or any misappropriation of musical compositions, graphic material, or artwork.
Yes, we always recommend you get professional indemnity.
We are seeing an increase in claims relating to copyright and intellectual property. It’s very easy for a third party to bring an allegation of negligence or breach of intellectual property, even if the grounds for doing so are unfounded.
Employers’ liability will protect you from legal costs should an employee sustain a bodily injury in the course of their employment.
Yes, if you have any employees, it is compulsory in the UK to have employers’ liability.
We know the creative industries are unique because of the prevalence of freelancers. Even if you employ an extra pair of hands for a short period of time, such as assistants, you should always maintain employers’ liability.
No, we don’t charge administration fees.
However, an increase in cover may result in an additional premium due.
Theft from unattended vehicles is limited to £5,000 if there is no manufacturer’s approved alarm.
This increases to £15,000 if there is an approved alarm installed.
Contact us if you need to make a claim and you’ll be allocated a personal claims handler.
Our standard excess is £200, or £500 for theft from vehicles.
You can pay in full, by two instalments or by direct debit.
Some of our partner insurers offer monthly instalments at no extra cost.
Yes, typically the finance providers will charge for direct debit, which is why we encourage clients to pay in full or two instalments.
If you want to pay by direct debit we’ll explain the charges.
If you have been transparent with us and declared all previous claims it will not affect your policy with us.
In most cases we will need to declare the claim to the insurers.
We can cover drones for theft but your policy won’t cover your drones in flight or any aviation liability. We are working on a solution so watch this space.
We partner with a number of high-quality insurers. Their details will be shared on all quotes.
elements that can be included in your Design Studios Insurance package
Editing and technical media insurance for design studios
This is cover for damage or theft of your editing and techncial media equipment and computers. All risks coverage, including accidental damage and theft as standard on all policies. Available on all types of photographic, film, media and computer equipment.
Unlike other providers we can also cover hired equipment in addition. Our policies always include cover for the hire fees whilst your equipment is being repaired or replaced.

Public and employers' liability for post-production studios
Public liability covers bodily injury or property damage caused by your design studio. It is often purchased alongside employers’ liability, which protects from legal claims should an employee sustain a bodily injury in the course of their employment.
Employers’ liability is a legal requirement in the UK, and you should be aware you may be required to have employers’ liability in place to cover those who work with you temporarily, such as assistants and models.
Professional indemnity for design studios
Professional indemnity covers you for mistakes, or allegations that you’ve made a mistake. Any old professional indemnity will not suffice. Our policies are tailored to cover the unique risks faced by professionals in the media and marketing industry, including breach of intellectual property or copyright, breach of licences and unintentional breach of client contracts.
Many insurers will provide design studios with a miscellaneous professional indemnity policy which excludes the key risks you face. Don’t get caught out.
