Insurance for Mortgage Brokers
Mortage Broker insurance with a difference. We offer unique and specialist claims handling, with our own in-house compliance experts.
What you need to know about insurance for mortgage brokers
It’s been an unpredictable couple of years for mortgages and our mortgage broking clients. The 1.5-2% interest rate mortgages are a thing of past and uncertainty has increased risks for brokers. But we know that suitability and affordability are just as relevant.
There has been industry criticism of mortgages offered well beyond retirement age for instance and in theory providers should be accountable for unsuitable products. In practice, we see it’s often easier for a client to bring a claim or compliant against their broker for poor advice which is why you need robust professional indemnity insurance.
The increase in claims against brokers has so far been gentle, but with the continuining cost of living crisis and greater pressures on household finances, we expect to see claims relating to affordability and suitability increasing.
Our special relationships
Our relationships with our mortgage brokers go beyond arranging insurance, we are expert consultants as well. We understand that certain advisory work, such as interest-only mortgages and off-shore limited company mortgages may impact your professional indemnity insurance and we can provide the right guidance.
We work closely with specialist insurers with expertise in insuring mortgage brokers and advisers. Our experience and continuity set us apart and help us obtain competitive solutions for our clients.
Working with us, you can be sure you meet the minimum levels of insurance required by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Mortgage Brokers
Professional indemnity insurance is compulsory for all mortgage brokers that provide advice on residential or consumer mortgages. If you provide purely corporate finance, it may not be compulsory, but we’d still recommend it.
In recent years, we have seen an increase in claims, in part driven by social media and campaigns by some law firms, often referred to as ‘claims farmers’. These campaigns, previously focused on large investment providers, are now targeting companies of any size.
The Financial Conduct Authority has prescribed minimum thresholds which you’ll need to meet. The current minimum for professional indemnity is £1,850,000.
Professional indemnity covers you for allegations of mistakes and negligence.
In financial services that is typically anything that is deemed to be a complaint under Financial Conduct Authority rules.
It will help you provide a formal response to any complaints and will also cover any compensation that the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS), you or your insurers deem payable.
Typical claims include allegations of negligent advice (where applicable) or allegations of poor performance.
This can be complicated but insurers, and brokers, should be transparent about exclusions.
We will be able to advise but it’s worth knowing that some risks might be excluded, such as:
- Interest-only residential mortgages. Interest-only buy-to-let mortgages are common and usually less of a concern for insurers.
- Mortgages provided by offshore providers.
- Mortgages for clients over a certain age.
- Equity release (should you conduct such advice).
We can seek quotes for any UK mortgage brokers, regardless of specialism or size.
It is crucial that you understand your policy excess and how it can be applied in practice because excesses for mortgage brokers can be very high, with some starting at £5,000.
It can be complicated too but we can advise you.
Most excesses will apply to “each and every claimant”. If your excess, is £5,000 and it applies to each and every “claimant”, if you receive five simultaneous claims you may be facing a total policy excess of £25,000.
It’s important you check and audit your advisers and ensure no mistakes are being repeated.

Directors’ and officers’ insurance provides defence costs and monetary settlements in cases of claims made against company directors and senior managers. Complainants can include shareholders, regulators, or other third party stakeholders.
Directors’ and officers’ insurance usually excludes claims from clients related to advice provided by the business. Instead, this typically falls under the professional indemnity insurance module.

Crime insurance for mortgage brokers
Crime insurance primarily concerns the cash within your business and protects your business against direct losses, including theft from employees.
It can also cover funds transfer fraud, depending on how crime insurance interacts with cyber insurance, particularly in relation to social engineering losses. We’ll help you understand this.
Office insurance for mortgage brokers
Office insurance is usually a combined policy, covering your business property in the office, laptops and employers and liability insurance.
It can also be extended to include business interruption which covers the loss of income and/or additional costs while your business is out of action.
